So you went to the nursery and bought a handful of tomato transplants and now you want to plant them in your garden. Pretty simple right? Well, yes. But there might just be a trick to that trade. Here are some pointers to help make sure you get the best producing tomatoes possible.1 Prepare the beds. You will want to pull out any old plants or overgrown weeds and till the soil to break up any remaining roots. I generally add a little bit of fertilizer and/or compost and mix it in as well when I do this. Water well, and then let the ground sit for a few days.
Add some nutrients. Last year I added a little bit of fertilizer to the hole before I placed my transplants. This year I added crushed eggshells. Eggshells are a great source of calcium and can help deter blossom end rot. I decided to try it this year because 1) I was curious, and 2) the beds I planted my tomatoes in this year had some blossom end rot problems last year. Do your research and test your soil if needed to see what kind of nutrients would be helpful.
Place the plant. Like I said above, tomatoes should be planted in deep holes. Be sure to pull off the bottom few branches of the plant (especially the ones that will be underground) to help avoid the plant from picking up some sort of fungus or disease. Some people plant their tomatoes on their sides so more of the stem will root, but I just plant them straight and deep and have had a good amount of success doing it that way. It’s good for the stem to root some because it helps establish a stronger and fuller root system for the plant.
Fill the hole. This is a pretty simple and straightforward step. Just add the dirt back in around the transplant making sure it is level with the soil around it.
Water. As with any seed or transplant you plant, be sure to water thoroughly after it goes in the ground. And it is a good idea to water it every day until it gets established and has a good bit of new growth.
