As I sit here writing this, it is pouring outside. Austinites love it when it rains, this drought is just so insane here the past few years. It’s like people get all giddy and do a little happy dance. I might be one of them…
May is probably my favorite month in the garden. So much going on! And such an abundance of produce! This month I have already harvested lots of onions, tomatoes, pineapple tomatillos, peppers, strawberries, green beans, lettuce, and squash.
The tomatoes are almost all starting to blush…and not because they are embarrassed (sorry, I had to). It always feels like you wait forever for those green tomatoes to turn colors and then they all decide to at once and you are overwhelmed by how many ripe tomatoes you have sitting on your windowsill. I am not quite there yet, but getting close!
The squash is overflowing in the main garden. I have to be careful not to step on it when I am checking on the tomatoes. Compared to last year, my squash are like night and day. Last year I hardly got anything and then the squash vine borers took over. This year, I have already enjoyed a nice squash dinner! I think it’s because I did a little research and tried to plant squash that were more tolerant of the vine borer. Only time will tell though if it worked…
I am excited about my cucumber plants. This is my first year growing them and I can’t wait to see how they turn out. I grew them from seeds and they are finally starting to vine and grow up the fence and trellis. Plus they have lots of pretty yellow flowers!
And lastly my meyer lemons and limes are doing great. I can’t believe how big the meyer lemons are already! Can’t wait to harvest them down the road.
