We are thankful for our garden!
The windows in my kitchen overlook the backyard and the view makes me feel happy, everything in the garden is green and healthy!
Here’s a quick update…
Cabbage & Broccoli as well as several potato vines. It seems that once you plant potatoes in a certain area, they will continue to grow there forever.
It’s almost time to start harvesting the broccoli leaves to encourage crown development. The leaves are yummy chopped and sauteed with onions and covered in a balsamic glaze.
Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers and a surprise Watermelon sprouted from our homemade compost. It won’t likely stay warm enough to harvest a ripe melon but it sure is fun to watch it grow with the kids!
The other surprise in the bed is several garlic plants that I must have missed last Spring when I harvested several bulbs.
Brussels Sprouts with Red and White Onion
My four year old and I planted the onions and they are a bit too shallow and strangely spaced but it was a lot of fun to plant them together. It’ll be a fun lesson for her to harvest what she planted.
Sweet Potatoes, Fennel and Garlic
The potatoes will be harvested as soon as a freeze takes out the greens, which may be this weekend. Hopefully, they’ll survive and continue to grow.
Lettuce, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Herbs, Sugar Snap Peas
Kids Garden: Kale, Green Beans, Kohlrabi, Peas, Broccoli and Carrots in the walkway! There are patches of carrots in the walkway throughout the garden and I know that little hands dropped seeds in that spot. What I don’t know is if it was intentional or accidental but it still makes me smile.
Our asparagus bed is the big hedge and we are thrilled to begin harvesting this Winter after waiting two years as it got established. We’ll cut it to the ground next month and harvest every one of three spears that sprout from each plant.
