There’s more food on your broccoli plant than the initial head. Here are some ways to promote side shoot growth and extend your harvest. Oh, and those leaves – they are really quite good! Here is a recipe.1 Last month we harvested several heads of broccoli. When you remove them from the stalk, use a sharp knife and cut it at an angle so that water won’t collect in the hollow part of the stem.
2 Soon, side shoots will appear and you can promote their growth by continuing to harvest in a timely way. In my garden, we end up being 2-3 times as much broccoli in the form of side shoots than the initial head.
3 Keep your broccoli plant healthy by removing yellow leaves as well as damaged leaves (those with holes). Make sure to turn a leaf over here and there to check for insect activity. If/when you find bugs, spray them with an organic pesticide.
Pluck off several large, healthy leaves to eat. They taste wonderful and I’ll be posting a recipe later this week.
