I first tried to grow tomatillos two years ago, it failed. I didn’t get to harvest even one. I had two plants so they could cross pollinate but that may not have been enough. I didn’t bother trying last year but decided to give it another go this year. I started 18 from seed, sold 10 and planted the rest. The plants are huge and thriving and most importantly, producing well.
Tomatillos fall on the ground when they’re ready to be harvested! For this reason, it’s my new favorite on the list of kid-friendly plants.
This was my first attempt to make tomatillo sauce with homegrown produce and it was great. I used the sauce to make enchilada casserole.
I didn’t use the red bell peppers in the sauce. Instead, those were for homemade black bean salsa.
